Killed in Action 30/9/1918. Aged 27.
Walter was born in Burnley about 1892 the son of Alice Burns. In the 1901 census Walter aged 9 was living at 114 Leyland Rd, Burnley with his mother 43, his sisters Alice and Catherine aged 22 and 20 respectively and brother James who was 15.

Mrs. Bentley, of 76 Plumbe St, Burnley. Has received official notification of the death in action, on Sept. 30th of her brother, Second Lt. Walter Byrne, of the Loyal North Lancashire Regt. Aged 27 years and formerly employed as an engineer at a Nelson Foundry, the unfortunate officer had a splendid record. He joined the Burnley “Pals” Battalion in Sept. 1914 and after a period in Egypt, went to France. Three times he was recommended for distinction and in June last he was granted a commission for exceptional bravery in the field. He was a member of ST Mary’s R.C. Church. A brother is erving in India at the present time and another is an electrical engineer on a ship. A brother in law is also serving with the colours and another has been discharged.
Walter was buried in Beuvry Communal Cemetery Extension, France: Grave Ref III.C.1.
