Private Samuel Henry Curry.

13857 10th Cameronians (Scottish Rifles).

Killed in Action 24th October 1918, aged 21.

Samuel was born in Accrington about 1897, the son of William and Mary Ann Curry. In the 1901 census  the family were living at 11 Robert St, Burnley. William 39, a fish salesman was born in Preston, Mary his wife 47, Elizabeth 18, Ada 8, Florence 7 and Samuel 4 all born in Accrington, Lancs.

In the 1911 census the family had moved to 4 Park St, Burnley.  Mary 48, Ada 19 cotton spinner, Florence 18 cotton spinner, Samuel  14 cotton worker and Annie 9. Samuels parents had been married 28 years , had had 13 children 7 of whom had died.

 

From the Burnley Express dated 29th March 1919: KILLED IN OCTOBER .

News has now been received by Mrs Maguire, of 19 Granville Street Burnley, that her brother Private Samuel Curry, 13857, 10th Scottish rifles, who had been reported missing, since October 24 last, is now presumed to be killed on that date in France.  21 years of age at the time of his death, he enlisted in 1914 at the age of 17, and had been out since the beginning of 1915. He had been wounded three times and gassed once. Formerly he worked at Messrs Butterworth and Dixons Globe Ironworks.  This is the third war loss in the family two brothers-in-law having previously been killed: Private Patrick Maguire and Private D Grimshaw, both reported in the Express at the time. Curry's father lives at Accrington and the deceased soldier in civilian life, lived ..

 

Samuel left his effects to his father.

Samuel was buried in Montay Neuvilly Road Cemetery, France: Grave Ref; II.B.10. Son of William Currie, of 25, Plantation St., Accrington, Lancs.
