Private Samuel James Hunt

307129 2/8th Lancashire Fusiliers.

Missing in Action 21st March 1918, aged 38.

Samuel was born in the Sept quarter of 1879, Burnley. The son of Samuel Hunt and Mary Currie. In the 1881 census the family were living 21 Four Lane Ends. Samuel Hunt 34  born in Bury, Weaver, Mary 34  born in Ireland, John 8, Joseph 6,  Mary 3,  Samuel one, both morning Burnley.

In the 1891 census, the family had moved to 24 Westmorland Street Burnley. Samuel 44, Mary 44, John 18, Joseph 16, Mary 13, Samuel 11, and Richard 8 .

Samuel 19 a bachelor living at Cromwell Street married Ada Beatrice Miller 18 and a spinster on the 14th of December 1898 in the parish church of St. Peter's in Burnley.

In the 1901 census Samuel was living away, age 21, in Church Street, Cowbridge, Shropshire.

By the time of the 1911 census Samuel and Ada were living 16 Clough Street,  Burnley. Samuel 31, Ada 30 born Warrington,  Louise Beatrice 11 George 8.  They have been married 12 years and had had three children one of whom had died.

 

From the Burnley Express dated 6th Sept 1919: A BURNLEY TRAM DRIVER.

Previous to entering the army a driver on the Burnley corporation Tramways Private S J Hunt, Lancashire Fusiliers, is presumed to have been killed on the 27th of March 1918, on which date his name was on the list of missing.

39 years of age he enlisted in July 1916 and went to France on March 4th the following year. He resided at 74 Gordon Street and attended St James's Church. One of his sons has served with the forces.

 

Lived at 74 Gordon Street.

Samuel left his effects to his widow Ada.

Samuel is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, France: Panel 32 to 34.
