 Assisted Suicide

We Want Support Not Suicide

From November 2024 to June 2025 we posted a number of requests for people to contact their MP (in Burnley Oliver Ryan at the time) to voice their opposition to a Bill, abbreviated to 'Assisted Dying' (evil dressed up as good), which was passing through Parliament. Parliament passed this misguided Bill in June but at least we can hold our heads high as we stood up to be counted. At the time of writing (3/7/25) it has still to be put before the House of Lords. Perhaps they will be more astute and sensible and see through the real meaning and what it is likely to lead to.

If not then if either the Conservative or Reform Party gains power at the next general Election then possibly this evil law will be repealed. Let us hope and pray so.

Below is a history of our opposition, in reverse date order, that is newest first:

The vote is tomorrow (see below). Act tonight!

Wednesday 18th June 2025

We're now less than 48 hours away from the crucial Third Reading vote on the Leadbeater assisted suicide Bill this Friday (20 June).

We know many of you have already taken action, and we're really grateful. Thank you.

But there's something new and urgent MPs need to hear before they cast their vote this Friday.

NEXT 30-SECOND ACTION - RISKS FOR PEOPLE WITH DOWN'S SYNDROME

The Down Syndrome Research Foundation has launched a new tool to help people contact their MP. It highlights why this Bill could pose very real dangers to people with Down's syndrome – something many MPs won't yet have considered.

It takes just 30 seconds to send a message, and it could make a real difference at this crucial moment.

 NOT DEAD YET

The disability rights group, Not Dead Yet UK, is asking people to contact their MP using a new tool on their website. It explains exactly why this Bill would be a disaster for people with disabilities.

Even if you have contacted your MP already, it's really important to contact your MP again using this new tool – so your MP hears specifically about the serious risks this Bill poses to people with disabilities.

Please take action now and click the button below to use their tool to contact your MP. It only takes 30 seconds.

From Catherine Robinson,
Right To Life UK

PLEASE ACT NOW

In two weeks' time, MPs will cast the final, decisive vote on the Leadbeater Assisted Suicide Bill. If just 28 switch, the Bill falls. Some have already switched, so victory is within reach, but only if we act now.

It is down to the wire. Every single vote counts, the numbers are tight, and the stakes could not be higher.

TAKE ACTION NOW

This evening, we launched the final two-week push of our Support Not Suicide campaign by unveiling the new Right To Life Petitions platform.

As part of this highly targeted final phase of the campaign, we have launched a stand-alone petition in your constituency, to your local MP.

I need you take action and add your name to the local petition now (even if you have emailed your MP before, it's important you also sign the petition too).

Your signature has real power. A petition signed by a large number of people in your constituency calling on your MP to vote against the Leadbeater assisted suicide Bill will carry real weight.

This will give undeniable proof to your MP that there are a very large number of people in your constituency who want them to turn up at the crucial vote on 20 June and vote NO!

A flood of local signatures from your constituency could tip the balance and stop this dangerous Bill in its tracks.

Please click the button below to sign the local petition to your MP now. It only takes 30 seconds.

Once you have signed, please consider becoming a Local Champion and collecting signatures at your local church, mosque or community group. Full details on how you can easily do this are provided on the petition page.

Click here to sign the petition to your local MP now

Thank you so much for your help during these crucial two weeks.

We can do this!

May

21/5/25

Hi, assisted suicide can still be defeated at 3rd Reading. As many of you will know, Oliver Ryan, our MP for Burnley, Padiham and Brierfield sadly voted in favour of this Bill, however, the 'Right to Life' campaign group have created a follow up email action to send to MPs, before more voting takes place on further amendments and a possible vote on it passing to its final Reading. This additional 3rd Reading will take place this coming Friday, 23rd May, so email your MP NOW - it takes just 30 seconds

The MP email tool at the link is quick and easy to use. Every email makes a difference. Please God, this Bill can be defeated as proper scrutiny of it hasn't occurred, and it's innately wrong.

14/5/25

This is from Right To Life UK:

We're now just two days away from Report Stage of the Leadbeater assisted suicide Bill at Westminster, happening this Friday, 16 May.

This is the next major stage for the Bill as it progresses through the Commons.

TAKE ACTION

We've just launched a new email tool, with updated information we need MPs to see ahead of Friday.

Your MP needs to know that many people in your area still care deeply about this issue - and that you want them to oppose the Leadbeater Bill on Friday.

Even if you've emailed your MP before, it's important to get back in touch now using the new tool.
Please take action and click the button below to contact your MP now. It only takes 30 seconds.

Kim Leadbeater's Bill Delayed

(but not yet dead so please act now)

From Catherine Robinson, Right To Life UK

I want to share an important update with you.

Kim Leadbeater has decided to delay the next stage (day one of Report Stage) of her assisted suicide Bill from 25 April to 16 May.
Although we don't know for sure why she has made this decision, we do know that her team have been going around MPs' offices in Parliament trying to work out if they have the numbers to win a vote on the Bill.

It's very possible they realised they don't currently have the support to win - and decided to buy themselves more time.
That means we now have three extra weeks.

But the assisted suicide lobby won't be standing still. They will be using every minute of this extra time.
So it's vital we don't get complacent. We need to use every day between now and 16 May to reach as many MPs as possible - and persuade them to oppose this dangerous Bill.

That's why, tonight, we've launched the Support Not Suicide campaign - a major new nationwide campaign that we will be running over this final phase leading up to the vote on the Bill at Third Reading.
This campaign will be entirely focused on defeating this dangerous Bill. If assisted suicide is legalised, thousands of vulnerable lives will be put at risk. We cannot let that happen.

TAKE ACTION NOW

Tonight, as part of the launch of the campaign, we are asking you to take the first important and vital campaign action: requesting a meeting with your MP.

A number of MPs we have spoken to have made it clear that constituents taking the time to go and visit their MP in person is the best way to make a significant difference with this Bill.

They have asked that people in every constituency around the country visit their MP as a matter of urgency.
I know meeting your MP might feel daunting, so we've made it easy.
We've created a dedicated mini-site that guides you through the process. It includes:
• A simple EasyAction tool that lets you request a meeting with your MP in just 30 seconds
• An introductory video guide, Insider Tips for Meeting with Your MP, where Tom Hunt (former MP) and Rupert Evans (our Director of Public Affairs) share tips and talking points to help you prepare
• An in-depth step-by-step 'how to' guide
• A clear MP briefing you can take to your meeting

Please don't wait. Take action now and click the button below to ask your MP for a meeting now or find out more about meeting with your MP. It only takes 30 seconds.

Even if you're not sure yet, I urge you to watch the video. It's a great first step - and will help you see that meeting with your MP is something you can do.

After you've contacted your MP to ask for a meeting, please take one more important step: encourage like-minded friends and family to do the same. Simply forward this email to them so they can take action too. Every meeting counts!

Best wishes,

Cardinal Vincent's Pastoral Letter:

Pastoral Letter on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill To be read at all Masses 5th/6th April 2025 Fifth Sunday of Lent

Pastoral Letters from a Cardinal are almost as rare as hen's teeth yet Vincent, Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster has chosen to issue one to all churches in England and Wales on the subject of the increasingly notorious Assisted Suicide Bill currently being forced though Parliament.
Why has the Archbishop of Westminster chosen to issue such a Pastoral Letter, and why now?

February

Update: very serious allegations of bias by the committee examining the Bill have arisen. These allegations are disturbing and if true (and we have no reason to doubt them) then they make a mockery of democracy and justice.

Please go to https://righttolife.org.uk/asbillaction . Please read the text and if you are as disturbed by these allegations as we are then please sign the petition. If enough of us protest about the abominable way this Bill is being pushed through then they can't ignore us so easily. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing” (original author uncertain).

January

This is taken from an email from Right To Life. Please support them as much as you can:

As of 28th January 2025 the assisted suicide Bill is at the Committee Stage in Parliament, where a group of 23 MPs will examine the Bill in detail.

It is very important that the many risks and flaws with the Bill are brought to the attention of the Committee. By highlighting these concerns, we will help MPs understand the major problems with introducing assisted suicide and why they must vote against the Bill when it comes to Third Reading later in the year.

TAKE ACTION

The Committee has recently issued a call for written evidence. It is inviting people with relevant expertise or personal experience to submit evidence about the Bill and its proposals.

The Committee will begin considering evidence on 28 January.

If you have the appropriate expertise or personal experience, it is really important that you submit evidence.

While there is no deadline for submitting evidence, we strongly advise doing so as soon as you can.

To find out if you fit the criteria to make a submission and learn how to make your submission, click the link below to access our guide on how to make a submission.

If you do not fit the criteria to submit evidence, there will be many more opportunities to help with ensuring this dangerous Bill is defeated at Third Reading.

What you can do to help now is to forward this link https://righttolife.org.uk/SubmissionGuide on to anyone with relevant expertise or personal experience who is concerned about the Bill and encourage them to make a submission. If you need more information about identifying those who might qualify, the submission guide linked above provides further details.

November

Disappointly, the first reading of the death bill was passed on 29th November 2024 by Parliament but with a much smaller majority than many expected.

However, this insidious, immoral, wrong-headed Bill still has a long way to go through the House of Commons and then the House of Lords -

The fight isn't over - we'll publish the next steps you can take to oppose this dreadful Bill as soon as they become known; watch this space!

Meanwhile you might like to see actor and disability rights advocate Liz Carr's BBC documentary on assisted suicide, Better Off Dead? You can watch it for free by clicking the link below (you do not need a TV licence). It might give you some ideas about what you'd like to say to Oliver Ryan.
