Lance Corporal Michael Carroll
Service Number: 46759
13th Bn. Royal Welsh Fusiliers
Killed in Action 2nd September 1917, aged 23

From the Burnley Express dated 22nd September 1917: A MAGNIFICENT YOUNG FELLOW
Last week Mr. & Mrs. Carroll, Hebrew Road, Burnley, received word from a companion that her son, Lance Corporal Michael Carroll, 46759 of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, had been killed in action September 2, and official confirmation of the sad news, and the King's sympathy, were received yesterday morning.
Lance Corporal M. Carroll was a prominent member of St John's R. C. Church, Ivy Street. In his youthful days he served Mass on the altar, and was a young man of great promise. He served in the choir, was a very practical worker and a most edifying young fellow. Always cheerful, he was the soul of every company or party held, and was prominently associated with the club associated with St. John's and the operatic society - in a phrase - he was a magnificent young fellow of whom great hopes were entertained. When he went out he was quite cheerful and his letters home breathed the same spirit. Reference was made to him last Sunday at St. John's Church and on Wednesday a Requiem Mass was held, the altar being draped in black, and a large congregation showed their sympathy with Mr. & Mrs. Carroll and family.
Mr. & Mrs. Carroll have three sons and two sons-in-law serving in the Army. The deceased soldier, who was a Weaver prior to joining the Army on January 26, 1916 going abroad in the May following, was 23 years of age.
Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium: Panel 63 to 65
