Private Herbert Green

10751 2nd East Lancashire Regiment.

Killed in Action 12th March 1915, aged 22.

Herbert was born in the June quarter 1892, Burnley. The son of Herbert Green and Margaret Trainor. In the 1901 census the family lived at 29 Vernon St, Burnley. Herbert 38 born in Liverpool, Margaret 36 born in Ireland, John 12, Herbert 9, Thomas 5, and Joseph 3 all born in Burnley.

In the 1911 census Herbert was lodging at 140 St James St, Burnley and his occupation was a Cotton Duffer.

 

From the Burnley Express dated 17th April 1915: Burnley collier's fate.

Included in one of the latest casualty lists is the name of Private H Green 10751, of the East Lancashire Regiment. Private Green was A Collier and an army reservist and he was killed in action last month. He formerly resided in Vernon Street Burnley.

 

From The Express and Advertiser dated 1st May 1915: Roll Of Honour.

Green: killed in action at Neuve Chapelle. On March 11. Private Herbert Green of the 2nd East Lancashire Regiment. From his sister, Miss Margaret Green, 27 Moseley Street Burnley.

 

Lived on New Market Street, Colne.

Herbert left his effects to his mother Margaret.

Herbert is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France:  Panel 18.
