Rifleman Edward Howarth

51230 1/5th Liverpool Regiment.

Died 17th July 1918, aged 31.

Edward Ernest was born in Burnley about 1888. The son of Robert Howarth and Elizabeth Ashbridge. In the 1891 census the family lived at 34 Travis St. Robert 33 mule spinner, born in Darwen, Elizabeth 28 cotton winder born in Blackburn, Clara 9, George 6, Edward 3, Mary 1 all born in Burnley.

By the time of the 1901 census the family had grown and also moved to 80 Ardwick St, Burnley.  Robert 43, Elizabeth 38, Clara weaver, 19, George 16 warehouseman, Edward 13 paper maker, Mary 11, Elizabeth 9, Nora 7, Robert 1.

In the 1911 census they lived at 75 Albert St, Burnley. Robert 54, Elizabeth 50, George 26, Edward 23, Elizabeth 20 Mary 22, Norah 18, Robert 12, Alfred 9 and James 5. His parents had been married 31 years and had had 10 children 2 of whom had died.

 

From the Burnley Express dated 27th July 1918: WORST NEWS FOLLOWS.

News had been received by Mrs Howarth of 75 Albert Street Burnley to the effect that her son rifleman Edward Haworth, 51230, of the kings Liverpool Regiment had been missing since April 9th, but on Wednesday morning official notification was to hand that he was presumed to have been killed on that date.

 Rifleman E Haworth was a single man, 31 years of age and was formerly a Collier at Rowley Pit, and attended St Mary's Roman Catholic Church. He enlisted in February 1917 and went out last February. There is another brother serving in France who is only 19 years of age, whilst a second brother has been discharged after service.

 

Lived at 75 Albert Street.

Edward left his effects to his mother.

Edward is commemorated on the Dud Corner Loos Memorial, France: Panel 27 to 30. Son of Mrs. E. Howarth, of 75, Albert St., Burnley.
